Magnet Programs

The Automotive Service Technology program prepares students for employment as automotive technicians by providing state-of-the-art automotive service repair techniques on both foreign and domestic vehicles. Automotive technicians perform preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repair on automobile and light truck systems. The program content includes, but not limited to: electrical systems, engine performance, brakes systems, and steering/suspension systems. The curriculum integration of theory and practice prepares students to take the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification test(s). High school students have the opportunity to test in Brakes and Electrical, among other ASE areas.

ASE College Credit Transfer Opportunity and/or Advanced Credit upon completion of the program and meeting eligibility requirements, students may be awarded credits toward an Associate Degree by Broward College or the Florida College System.

Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Heating is a high demand career field. The programs train students for employment as heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics or air conditioning installer-servicers. Instruction and laboratory activities include planning, installing, testing, and servicing of A/C, refrigeration, and heating systems and components, taught on state-of-the-art equipment. Students also learn troubleshooting electrical and mechanical components; testing, diagramming, and solving problems in A/C, refrigeration, and heating equipment; brazing and soldering tubing and piping; installing and servicing controls and components; electrical wiring; troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical systems; routine maintenance and service. This program also offers EPA certification, comprehensive recovery, and recycling.

Applied Cybersecurity is a hands-on program that will give students real-world security scenarios. Through this program, students will learn to identify security threats, protect computers from hackers and malware, and secure wireless networks. Instruction will focus on how to secure residential, as well as business computers, and fill the demand at public and private companies to address internet security concerns in today’s world.

The state approved course content includes foundational knowledge and skills in computer and network security, security vulnerabilities, attack mechanisms and techniques, intrusion detection and prevention, cryptographic systems, system hardening, risk identifications, incident response, penetration testing, key management, access control, and recovery. Specialized courses focus on database security, planning and analysis, software, and web security. Throughout this program, students will prepare for security+ and nationally recognized security industry certifications.

The Building Trades & Construction Design Technology program is designed to prepare students for employment in the residential and commercial construction industry. The content includes but is not limited to: applying construction techniques; reading plans and specifications; and developing trade skills in carpentry, masonry, electricity, plumbing and air conditioning. The curriculum integration of theory and practice provides students with fundamental entry level skills necessary for the construction industry.

The Business Management and Analysis Program is designed to prepare students for employment as a Supervisor, Manager Trainee, or Small Business Owner. The content focuses on broad, transferable skills of business supervision including: communications and human resource management; finance; technology; bookkeeping; environmental health and safety; and computer applications. In addition, students learn the functions of management, forms of business ownership, organizational structures, business law and ethics, insurance, government regulations in business, and how to open and operate a business. As a final project, students prepare a portfolio and business plan. The Business Management and Analysis Program prepares students for the Intuit Quickbooks certification.

The Cosmetology Training program focuses on a broad spectrum of subjects, which include but are not limited to:

Students are introduced to the laboratory where they render hair, basic nails and skin care services to the general public for a nominal fee. This invaluable work experience at Sheridan Technical College prepares the student with entry level skills for the job market.

The Cosmetology curriculum is designed to qualify students for the Cosmetology Licensing Examination which is governed by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. This program is very limited in seating and is only available for incoming 11^th grade students.

The Culinary Arts program covers Sanitation & Safety, Garde Manger (Cold Foods), Hot Foods, Baking, Nutrition, Supervision & Management, and controlling foodservice costs. This program is accredited by the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation, Inc. in which credits articulate to Broward College towards a Culinary Arts Management Degree. Students may apply for experiential credit if currently employed in a qualified food service position.

Total hours each term will be a combination of classroom, lab and on-line work. Qualified students have the opportunity to obtain the ServSafe certifications. Additional skills covered in the Culinary Arts program include:

The Early Childhood Education/Early Childhood Professional Certification (ECPC) Program prepares students for employment within the industry as early childhood educators, lead preschool teachers, VPK teachers, before-care/after-care workers and supervisors, child development specialists, directors/owners, and family day care home operators.

Included are the following major areas of training: child growth and development; health; safety; nutrition; behavior guidance techniques; child abuse and neglect; rules and regulations governing child care; community and environmental issues; language development and emergent literacy; lesson and program planning; implementation of developmentally appropriate practices for children birth through age eight; inclusion of children with special needs; interpersonal relations; communication; balancing family, school and work; employability skills; labor issues; entrepreneurship; and management and finance.

Early Childhood Education is a Florida Department of Education Early Childhood Professional Certificate (ECPC) program. The ECPC is accepted for the Department of Children and Families Staff Credential. Students who complete the ECE/ECPC program are prepared to pursue the national CDA credential and are also eligible for nine (9) college credits at any state public university.

This program focuses on training in electricity for residential, commercial and industrial systems. The students will be instructed on conduit bending techniques, blueprint reading, fire alarm installation, journeyman preparation and interpreting national and local electrical codes. Students will also master the understanding of all aspects of the electricity industry’s planning, management, finance, technical and productions skills, with underlying principles of technology, labor issues, community issues and health, safety and environmental issues. This program is very limited in seating and is only available for incoming 11^th grade students.

The Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technology program prepares students for employment as electrocardiograph aides, electrocardiograph technicians, cardiovascular technologists/technicians or to provide supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in this occupation. EKG technicians, also known as cardiographic or electrocardiogram technicians, perform diagnostic tests to aid doctors in identifying and treating cardiovascular problems in patients.

The program content includes, but is not limited to: communication and interpersonal skills, overview of human anatomy and physiology with emphasis on cardiac and vascular systems, medical terminology and transcription, patient care techniques, medical instrumentation, cardiovascular drugs, interpretation of monitoring and testing results, medical ethics, cardiac wellness and rehabilitation, safe and efficient work practices, CPR, Basic Life Support. (BLS) and employability skills. The curriculum integration of theory and practice prepares students to take the Certified EKG Technician assessment. Students will be prepared to take an approved state and/or nationally recognized industry certification or licensure exam in their field of study.

The Legal Administrative Specialist Program is designed to prepare students for employment as a general office clerk, clerical support staff, administrative support staff, and legal secretary. The content focuses on broad, transferrable skills in the area of legal administrative specialist, including communications; critical thinking and decision-making; legal terminology; office procedures and practices specific to the legal environment; transcription of legal documents; utilization of advanced software applications; career research; the legal aspects of business and papers; and the development of high-quality employment portfolios and job seeking documents. The Legal Administrative Specialist Program prepares students for the Accredited Legal Professional certificate.

This program will provide students with a variety of skills for employment in the medical field to perform administrative support functions. Students in the Medical Administrative Specialist program will learn medical office duties that utilize knowledge of information technology, medical terminology, medical billing and coding, medical transcription. Students will prepare to attain the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) certification through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) to become part of the Allied Health Profession.  As a CMAA you may perform the following tasks:

• Review and answer practice correspondence
• Operate computer systems to accomplish office tasks
• Answer calls, schedule appointments, greet patients and maintain files
• Update and maintain patient and other practice-specific information
• Coordinate operation reports such as time and attendance

Upon completion of the program and meeting eligibility requirements, students may be awarded up to 25 college credits toward an A.S. or A.A.S. Degree by Broward College or up to 21 credits by other selected Florida Community Colleges.

The Medical Assisting program curriculum includes the following major skill areas: interpersonal skills, legal and ethical responsibilities, health illness concepts, and administrative and clinical duties. Medical Assistants perform many administrative duties, including answering the telephone, greeting patients, updating and filing patients’ medical records, an introduction to diagnosis and CPT codes, filling out insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services, and handling billing and bookkeeping. Curriculum includes computer literacy and electronic medical health record practice management software applications. Clinical duties may vary according to the office, but can include taking medical histories and recording vital signs, preparing patients for examinations and procedures, performing venipuncture, electrocardiograms (EKGs), assisting with office/ambulatory surgery, administering medication under the direction of physician, collecting specimens and performing limited laboratory examinations. The Medical Assistant works with the office healthcare provider to care for their clients in a safe and effective manner.

The Network Support Services program prepares students for employment in network administration as network support specialists or provides supplemental training for people previously or currently employed in networking support occupations. The program prepares students to create, monitor, and maintain computer networks and operate computers and peripheral equipment.

The Network Support Services program offers a sequence of courses that provides coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in network support services positions. Cisco Networking Academy is the foundation of the program and supplemented with project-based skill building labs (hands-on and virtual). This program prepares students to create, monitor, and maintain computer networks implementing IPv4 and IPv6. Laboratory activities are an integral part of this program allowing students to demonstrate mastery of essential skills for networking and cyber-security.

Students will be prepared to take an approved state and/or nationally recognized industry certification or licensure exam in their field of study.

• Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) in Routing and Switching
• Alternative certifications such as A+ and Network+ are available based on the student’s skill level

The Pharmacy Technician – Applied Technology Diploma (ATD) program is designed to prepare students for employment as pharmacy technicians in a variety of healthcare and pharmaceutical settings. Under the supervision of a registered  pharmacist, pharmacy technicians perform essential tasks such as receiving and dispensing medications, managing  inventory, compounding and packaging pharmaceutical products, and ensuring proper labeling and distribution. As the role of pharmacy technicians continues to expand, they are increasingly responsible for routine duties that were once  performed by pharmacists, and they must stay current with evolving pharmacy technologies. Upon successful completion of the program, students earn an Applied Technology Diploma, equipping them with the skills and credentials needed to enter the workforce as competent and knowledgeable pharmacy technicians.

This program is approved by the Florida State Board of Nursing, which makes the graduate eligible to take the examination to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The content includes, but is not limited to: theoretical instruction and clinical experience in medical, surgical, obstetric, pediatric and geriatric nursing; theoretical instruction and clinical experience in both acute and long term care situations; theoretical instruction and clinical application of vocational role and function; personal, family and community health concepts; nutrition; human growth and development over the life span; body structure and function; interpersonal relationship skills; mental health concepts; pharmacology and administration of medications; legal aspects of practice; Basic Life Support (BLS), computer skills, and employability skills. Students are introduced to the clinical area early in the program. Theory and clinical procedures are integrated into the curriculum to reinforce learning.

Licensed graduates may be employed in hospitals, extended care facilities, physicians offices, HMOs, home healthcare and hospice agencies, as well as private patient care. LPNs work under the direction of a registered nurse (RN) or licensed physician. LPNs may continue their education by pursuing an Associate of Science degree or Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
