Spoken Word Poetry Club
Spoken Word Sponsor - Mrs. McAfee

The Spoken Word Poetry Club at Sheridan Tech is a group of individuals who look for ways to speak their minds through the arts. The club refers to themselves as "Beowulves" because "they came to conquer." Every student in the club plays a role, whether it is writing a group piece or giving advice on someone’s personal poem. Poetry truly is a safe space for these students. The club meets throughout the year and their work culminated in participating in a poetry competition in Spring called “Louder Than A Bomb, FL.” High schools from Homestead to Jacksonville compete, putting their most skilled poets to the mic. Our club is always looking for more students to join and express themselves through poetry. A club fee of $20, to cover the LTAB entrance fee, will be assessed for each member of Spoken Word.
We are partnered with bluapple Poetry & Jason Taylor Foundation to encourage performances at two local open mics; Lyrical Lounge & VoiceBox, as well as the nationally recognized Louder Than A Bomb poetry slam.

Last Saturday, the Sheridan Technical High School Beowulves finished their slam poetry competition season. The team brought their A-game to the stage, earning 3rd in the competition in the Semifinal round. It truly was a battle of the mics with Cynthia M. crushing the competition, earing the highest scores of our team that night!
Then, on Wednesday, senior Samantha C. made STHS history as she not only was the 2nd poet to grace the Louder Than A Bomb, Florida Competition Stage but also that she earned the title "People's Choice" award for her amazing performances that night. Her poems "Wonderland" and "Stop-and-Go Traffic" captivated the audience, even earning a 9.8/10! Samantha has always been our choice, but now she has the official title of being "The People's Choice" for the 2024-2025 Louder Than A Bomb, Florida Season, and we couldn't be any prouder of her! Well done, Samantha!
